Biohazard Run Cleaning:

All patient housing where infectious diseases are suspect, should be appropriately labeled with yellow identification to ensure proper cleaning.

This process should be used for confirmed and suspect infectious disease cases. Accel disinfectant is used for any infectious disease cases.

• Dirty cages should be marked with a blue patient identification card folded into the cage bars.
• Remove all items from the run:
  • Place laundry into a biodegradable bag, then into a regular laundry bag
  • Cage paper, paper bowls and any other trash should be disposed of in biohazard red bags
  • Dishes should be sprayed in runs and sit for 10 minutes before transferring to dishwasher and run on a sterile cycle
• Grates should be removed and placed in the wash area, however they must stay away from all other grates- see a Kennel Technician.
• With cage door closed, spray with Accel from a foam gun attached to a high pressure hose. Open door and spray all four sides of cage, including ceiling and inside of door bars.
• Once Accel has completely coated surface, scrub away any organic material and spray with Accel again.
• Spray grates with Accel, scrub front sides and back with a biohazard labeled hand brush and then spray with Accel again.
• Allow the cage to sit for 10 minutes- using the back of identification car to write the time.
• This entire procedure should be repeated 3 times to ensure proper disinfection.
• After 3 x 10 minutes, spray the cage again with Accel to dampen the surfaces and thoroughly wipe clean the entire cage.
• Spray front and back of grates with water, flushing away any Accel residue.
• Place grates back into cage-towel dry if the run is to be used immediately by another patient
• Remove blue identification card and discard.
• If necessary, the cage will now be cultured for possible infectious diseases.
