Small Animal Isolation Cleaning Protocol

Procedure:

Before entering isolation, in the Isolation Clean Room, put on disposable coveralls, shoe covers and gloves. Then enter Isolation Unit.
When leaving Isolation, remove coveralls, shoe covers and gloves, place in Bio-Hazard
Bin. See PPE diagram posted in Isolation Clean Room.

Technicians will be responsible for removing all patient specific items once the patient has exited Isolation Unit. This includes fluid bags, thermometers, medications, housing supplies and patient stocked carts.
If patient is discharged outside of regular Kennel Technician hours 8am-8pm, patient care technicians will be responsible for primary cleaning of Isolation Unit. Kennel technicians will be alerted asap on return and will complete terminal cleaning.

Isolation Exam will be cleaned after each use.
Isolation Anteroom floor, walls and glass will be cleaned daily if occupied and upon request.
Individual Isolation Units will be cleaned on a request basis while occupied and after patient discharge.
Isolation Clean Room floor and surfaces will be cleaned daily if occupied.

Cages:

  • Spray dirty cages with Accel Foam Gun.
  • Scrub thoroughly to remove any gross debris.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Spray thoroughly with water.
  • Dry cages with paper towels.

Floors:

  • Spray Floor with Accel Foam Gun.
  • Scrub thoroughly to remove any gross debris.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes
  • Spray thoroughly with water.
  • Squeegee Dry.

Tables/Surfaces/Walls:

  • Spray surfaces, table, sink, walls with Accel.
  • Scrub thoroughly to remove any gross debris.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Wipe down surfaces with disposable paper towels and dispose in Bio-Hazard Bin.

Rubbermaid Carts:

  • Spray carts inside and out with Accel.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Spray thoroughly with water.
  • Turn over to dry.
  • Wipe dry before returning to the Isolation Clean Room.

Drains:

  • Clean drains, removing any debris, place in Bio-Hazard bags.
  • Remove Bio-Hazard bags, put into a 2nd Bio-Hazard bag and cart directly to loading dock Bio-Hazard containers.

Dishes:

  • Disinfect all dishes with Accel, allowing a 10 minute soak.
  • After disinfection, wearing gloves, place dishes in Isolation Clean Room dishwasher and run on sterilization cycle.

Laundry:

  • If laundry has been approved, remove from cages to Bio-Hazard Biodegradable Laundry Bags. Located in each Isolette (“E & “F” or Anteroom for “G” Run)
  • To remove from Isolation, place Bio-Hazard Biodegradable Laundry Bag into a clear plastic regular laundry bag and take directly to Laundry Room in Central Supply for pickup.
