Equine Infectious Anemia
Guidelines on admissions
- All horses over the age of six months old admitted to the hospital must have proof of a negative Coggins test for Equine Infectious Anemia within the past year (12 months).
- If a horse arrives at the hospital without a current Coggins test, one should be submitted before the animal is discharged.
- Horses with signs consistent with EIA from high risk populations that do not have a negative Coggins within the past year must be worked up and housed in isolation until a negative Coggins is obtained.
Management of Suspect Cases

- Contact will be made with NC State Veterinarian in conjunction with NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services by Senior Clinician on the case.
- The patient will continue to be housed in Isolation.
- Discharge will not occur until approval by NCDA&CS is issued.
