Farm Animal Patient Symptoms Definitions for Isolation and Restriction
Definitions for Farm Animal patients:
- Diarrhea
- Bowel movements that do not sit above the bedding and/or fecal staining in perineal area
- Presence of hemorrhagic diarrhea in calves <1 month of age necessitates housing in Isolation even in the absence of fever or neutropenia.
- Exception: Diarrhea as a result of non-infectious causes, which is likely not pathogen-related. For example, diarrhea resulting from treatment with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or administration of oral laxatives or cathartics, or resulting from a known clinical condition consistent with a non-infectious diarrhea.
- Fever
- Bovine = Any animal with a rectal temperature > 39.5°C/ >102.5F
- Small Ruminant = Any animal with a rectal temperature > 40°C/ >103.5F
- Neutropenia
- Neutrophil numbers below the established reference range published for the respective species and age group
- Abortion
- Early termination of a pregnancy due to infectious or noninfectious causes with expulsion of a dead fetus.
